British Columbia (B.C.) is rapidly becoming a global leader in quantum technology, with vibrant tech clusters in cities such as Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna. The province is attracting both established industry giants and dynamic start-ups, all drawn to its highly skilled, diverse tech talent pool.
B.C.’s quantum sector benefits from the support of a global network of Trade and Invest BC Trade and Investment Representatives (TIRs). These experts play a crucial role in connecting local companies to international opportunities by building strategic partnerships, facilitating participation in global events and tradeshows, and exploring programs that drive growth and innovation.
For example, B.C.’s South Korea Office provided essential on-the-ground assistance for the Canada-Korea Quantum Innovation Forum and Networking Lunch in late 2023. This event was part of Canada’s Quantum Technology Research and Development (R&D) delegation mission to South Korea. Led by the Trade Commissioner Service (TCS), the event was supported by the Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP). Initially, the TCS introduced BTQ Technologies (BTQ) to ID Quantique Korea (IDQ Korea), and the B.C. South Korea Office played an active role in supporting ongoing collaboration. This involvement laid the groundwork for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to be signed between the two companies in the summer of 2024.
BTQ Technologies is a global leader in quantum technology, with a focus on securing mission-critical networks. Founded by a team of cryptography experts, scientists and engineers, BTQ was established in 2021 and became a publicly listed company in Canada in 2023. Headquartered in Vancouver, BTQ now employs over 50 people with offices in Sydney, Taipei, Toronto and Seoul. The company offers a diverse range of post-quantum security solutions, including custom-built languages and compilers, cloud-based software and dedicated hardware.
BTQ’s flagship product, Preon – a robust and efficient post-quantum signature scheme – was selected by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a candidate for the Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) standardization process in 2023. This achievement marked a significant milestone for the company, positioning BTQ as a key player in the quantum security space.
ID Quantique (IDQ), established in Switzerland in 2001 by four scientists from the University of Geneva, is a trailblazer in quantum-safe security and quantum detection systems. Recognizing the transformative impact of quantum physics on information technology, IDQ has made substantial contributions to global cybersecurity, particularly in South Korea. IDQ has been backed by SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest telecom provider since 2016. Through this partnership, IDQ’s Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) chip was integrated into SK Telecom’s smartphone systems, marking a major step in securing mobile devices and applications that handle sensitive data.
In late October 2023, BTQ Technologies and IDQ Korea were introduced through the TCS during the Canada Quantum Technology R&D delegation mission to South Korea, facilitated by the CIIP. The TCS office in Seoul has continued to support BTQ’s expansion into South Korea. In July 2024, the two companies signed a MOU to collaborate on the development of next-generation authentication systems combining QRNG and PQC, strengthening their commitment to advancing quantum-safe security.
The Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) operates in more than 160 cities worldwide, offering Canadian businesses export advisory services, funding opportunities, accelerator programs and tailored support at trade events. The TCS’s Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP) enables Canadian companies to collaborate on international R&D projects that have commercialization potential. The program is delivered by Global Affairs Canada in partnership with the National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). For Canadian businesses seeking to expand internationally, the TCS provides invaluable support and guidance.
Following the mission, B.C. Korea Office’s Trade and Investment Representatives (TIRs) played an integral role by facilitating follow-up discussions with BTQ, offering further assistance and exploring new collaboration opportunities. In early summer 2024, the B.C. Korea Office introduced BTQ Technologies to the prestigious IQT Vancouver – Pacific Rim 2024 conference. Nicolas Alexandre Roussy Newton, Co-Founder and COO of BTQ, was invited as a featured speaker. The IQT Vancouver – Pacific Rim conference, organized by the Quantum Algorithm Institute (QAI) and Inside Quantum Technology (IQT), is a key international event that gathers leading experts in quantum computing, communications and security. Mr. Newton’s presentation provided valuable insights into the future of quantum computing and its implications for cybersecurity.
“BTQ is uniquely positioned to commercialize near term quantum technologies in Canada. Our focus on developing advanced quantum algorithms has resulted in real world examples of quantum advantage, a critical milestone for the industry. As quantum hardware matures, we look forward to expanding our presence in B.C. through collaboration with academia and additional hiring of quantum research talent.”
– Nicolas Roussy Newton
The event presented an important opportunity for BTQ to further solidify its position in the quantum technology sector and engage with industry leaders. The B.C. Korea Office remains committed to supporting BTQ’s efforts to expand partnerships with Korean companies and institutions.
