British Columbia (B.C.) is rapidly becoming a global leader in the tech world, home to a thriving technology sector where innovation meets opportunity. Known for its advancements in software development, artificial intelligence and immersive technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), B.C. offers the ideal environment for tech companies to grow and succeed. Its dynamic tech ecosystem, fueled by a talented workforce, competitive tax rates and a business-friendly time zone, has made it a hub for industries that span from entertainment to industrial applications.
While AR and VR are widely recognized for transforming video game entertainment and education, B.C. companies are now pioneering their use in new frontiers, including the steel and metal fabrication industry. One such innovator is Eterio Realities Inc., a Victoria-based leader in AR solutions that is reshaping fabrication process through advanced technology.
Founded in 2019, Eterio Realities Inc., is a software development company specializing in AR. They created FabStation, a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution that revolutionizes the fabrication and inspection processes in the steel, metal and recently the mass timber fabrication industries. FabStation helps transforms raw materials into finished products and structures by utilizing 3D technology in processes like cutting, shaping, assembling and finishing.
While working on the construction of a resort in 2010, the founder of Eterio Realities realized the limitations of traditional 2D drawings for representing complex 3D objects. This insight led to the creation of FabStation, designed to revolutionize the industry with more advanced visualization technology. FabStation uses state-of-the-art tools to project 3D assets into fabrication shops through the Microsoft Hololens 2, an enterprise-grade mixed reality headset. Their innovation is pushing the boundaries of what AR can accomplish, opening the door for other industries to explore similar opportunities.
Eterio’s flagship product, FabStation, is a leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) solution for the steel industry, developed by fabricators for fabricators. Its innovative mixed reality technology is revolutionizing the steel fabrication industry and beyond, allowing Eterio Realities to expand its global reach. Recently, the company won the BC Export Awards 2024.
In January 2025, Business In Vancouver (BIV) hosted the BC Export Awards 2024, recognizing the success and innovation of B.C.’s export companies. Eterio Realities won the “Emerging Exporter” award category, which honors a company that has ventured into export markets for the first time within the past three years and achieved remarkable success. The award highlights the company’s ability to overcome challenges, expand market reach and grow its business through exports. As part of their journey toward export success, Eterio Realities utilized valuable resources available to help B.C. businesses navigate the exporting process. One such resource is Export Navigator, a government-funded program that played a key role in helping Eterio Realities reach new markets. This program provides targeted support to assist businesses in exploring and entering global markets.
Launched in 2016, Export Navigator was created to increase awareness among B.C. business owners of available export services. Funded by the Government of B.C. and the federal government’s Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan), Export Navigator pairs local entrepreneurs with Export Advisors to guide them through the export process. Initially launched as a pilot program in four communities in October 2016, the program expanded to two additional communities in April 2017, becoming fully funded in April 2019. Export Advisors provide personalized, one-on-one support to help businesses navigate the exporting journey.
For Eterio Realities, Export Navigator served as a launchpad for global success. Through the program, the company was introduced to Trade and Invest BC, which helped facilitate connections with international buyers.
In Spring 2024, Export Navigator assisted Eterio Realities in exploring new international opportunities by leveraging federal and provincial resources. The company was connected with Trade and Invest BC, opening the door to markets such as Taiwan, which had not been previously considered.
In the summer of 2024, B.C.’s Trade and Investment Representatives (TIRs) from the Taiwan Office conducted an introductory call with Eterio Realities. After understanding the company’s needs, they reached out to targeted customers and facilitated discussions between potential buyers and Eterio Realties.
After several months of communication, WS Steel placed a trial order for a three-month subscription package. Eterio Realities provided training for WS Steel’s team to conduct inspections using the software before product shipments. During the trial, WS Steel purchased the necessary hardware locally, while Eterio Realties provided the software and ongoing support.
Following the successful trial, Trade and Invest BC and TIRs continued to introduce Eterio Realties to potential buyers and strategic partners, helping to expand its product into other industries through various federal programs.
